carrying the world around his neck
"I see no hope of it now. But I've got to do the best I can."

“Even if I should return to my world, I would be unable to go home regardless. There is something I must do, and returning home is not one of them. But people are right to question them - after all, they’ve proved untrustworthy?”

He paused.

“The right direction…yes, I can only hope it is. And what of you?”

Well… if you get what you’re meant to do done, why couldn’t that be one? That’s logical, isn’t it? To go home after…” At his query, she gives a minuscule nod to confirm his words. They’ve tricked us before, but it’s hard to say. Since it’s been a year, apparently. But… I’m like you, I guess. Going home… isn’t something I can do anymore. Not now. Staying here, though? It’s farther from home than that crystal.

At least there, I’m closer to keeping a promise. If… that makes sense.”

He didn’t rightly know what to say to the young miss, at that. She meant to encourage, but encouragement such as that was not possible. Frodo was aptly confident in the fact that there was no return journey. He had a feeling, somehow, in some way, not necessarily by way of Mordor back to the Shire, that he would not return to something. But he didn’t know which.

But he smiled at her, a small little smile, to show he appreciated her sentiment – but it didn’t quite reach his eyes. “Yes, I suppose that’s true. Perhaps I will make for home afterward and have a large feast for it." But I don’t think so.

Her words were curious in a sense.

A crystal? He wasn’t one to pry too deeply into those he didn’t know quite well, but he couldn’t help but ask what she meant by a promise.

"A promise? I relate. I think we all have promises to keep.”
